The Princes Mead SE5A Aeroplane
The SE5A suspended within the Princes Mead atrium was manufactured by the company AJD Engineering Ltd from original 1st World War drawings. Due to fire legislation, the aircraft is covered in Nomex fabric. However, the original would have been covered with Irish linen, frayed tapes and then doped in order to shrink the fabric to a drum tightness.

The SE5A was the first aircraft made by the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough as a true factory aircraft in 1917/18. Its contemporaries such as the Sopwith Camel and Sopwith Pup were made by a variety of craftsmen in a variety of locations, whereas the SE5A was a complex aircraft with a multitude of forgings and castings which could only be made under the strict control of a sophisticated modern factory.

The story of the pilot, Mick Mannock, can be read on a special poster holder on the mall opposite Phones 4 U.

We are extremely proud of our aeroplane and its connections with the Farnborough aircraft factory.
